Is Emergency Roof Repair Possible at Weekends?

The Actual Hours

Emergency call-outs run 24 hours a day Monday to Friday. On Saturday and Sunday the hours are 8:00 to 19:00.

That is the honest position rather than a marketing one. Plenty of roofing firms advertise round-the-clock cover seven days and answer a call centre; we would rather tell you when somebody will actually come out.

Outside those weekend hours, leave a message or send an enquiry and it is picked up first thing. If water is coming in overnight on a Saturday, the practical advice is in the next section, and most of it is things you do indoors.

What Can Be Done at a Weekend

Everything that can be done on a weekday within daylight and reasonable weather.

Making a roof watertight - sheeting, temporarily refixing, removing what has moved.

Removing anything unsafe above a path or a door.

Clearing a blocked gutter, outlet or valley, which is more often the cause than people expect and takes very little time.

A full inspection and diagnosis, if the weather allows.

And in many cases the permanent repair itself, provided it does not need mortar to cure in a frost, an adhesive on a wet surface, or a scaffold delivery.

What Sets the Limit Is Weather, Not the Calendar

This is the part worth understanding, because it explains answers that can sound like reluctance.

Mortar. Bedding laid in a frost does not cure properly and fails early. Rebedding a ridge on a cold January Saturday produces work that will need doing again.

Adhesives and flat roof systems. Most need a dry surface and a minimum temperature. Applied wet or cold they do not bond, and the leak comes back.

Wind. There is a point at which nobody should be on a roof, and that judgement is not the customer's to make. If it is still blowing hard, the right answer is to secure what can be secured from below, cordon what is underneath, and go up when it drops.

Light. In December the weekend working day is short, and a proper diagnosis needs daylight and the loft.

None of those is about the day of the week. A Tuesday in a gale has the same limits as a Sunday in one.

What to Do If It Is Outside the Hours

Almost everything useful in the first half hour happens indoors anyway.

Turn off the electricity to any circuit where water is near a fitting. Keep out of any room with a bulging ceiling and shut the door. Get a bin under the drip, with a towel in the bottom. Move what you can. Lift carpets if water is spreading.

If something is loose above a path or a doorway, keep people away from it and use another door.

And photograph everything before it is moved or tidied, inside and out, because that is the evidence for any insurance conversation and it is easiest to get now.

Then ring first thing.

One Wallasey-Specific Note

A good number of the calls we take from Wallasey and New Brighton are recurring leaks rather than new damage - a leak that has been repaired before and has come back.

If that is your situation, a weekend emergency call-out is usually the wrong tool. What a recurring leak needs is a proper diagnosis in daylight, and often a water test - wetting one area at a time from the bottom of the slope upwards with somebody watching inside. That takes hours and settled weather.
