Opening a roof window doesn't necessarily mean reaching for a handle. Electric and solar-operated roof windows provide convenient control of ventilation and are particularly useful where windows are installed above stairwells, furniture or other difficult-to-reach positions.
Smart Roof Window Solutions
Depending on the selected system, features can include:
- Remote operation
- Electric opening
- Solar-powered opening
- Automatic rain sensors
- Programmable ventilation
- Compatible blinds and accessories
Ideal for Hard-to-Reach Windows
Electric and solar operation is particularly useful for high-level installations. Instead of avoiding a higher position because you wouldn't be able to reach the window, automated operation can allow the window to be positioned where it provides the most useful daylight.
Solar or Mains Electric?
The right choice depends upon the property and installation. We'll help you understand the available options and select a system suited to your particular roof and room.

What the Spec Sheet Says
Electric and solar VELUX windows share the same convenience benefits but get there in different ways, which affects what we recommend depending on the installation.
- Electric versions are operated from a wall switch or a phone app, and close automatically when a moisture-sensing circuit detects rain.
- Solar versions run on an integrated battery charged by a small panel built into the window, so no mains wiring is needed at the roof.
- Because constant contact with rain would otherwise drain a solar unit's battery, solar windows use a sound-triggered sensor instead — it reacts to the vibration of raindrops hitting the glazing rather than moisture itself.
- Both electric and solar windows are available across the centre-pivot and top-hung ranges, so the automation doesn't limit which opening style suits the room.
